Fysiogroep Nederland: two deals, one negotiation
For Jurian Donders, Fysio Donders was never just another physiotherapy practice. The company was founded in 1981 by his father. Since Jurian took over the business in 2013, Fysio Donders had grown into a multidisciplinary practice with three locations and around fifty employees. Even so, Jurian decided to sell the practice to Fysiogroep Nederland; not because he was done with physiotherapy, but because he wanted to increase his impact.
When Jurian took over Fysio Donders in 2013, it was still a small-scale practice at his home with two treatment rooms and a small team. Jurian saw opportunities to take the practice further. He moved to a larger building, broadened the range of services and developed Fysio Donders into a multidisciplinary place where physiotherapy, vitality, lifestyle and other disciplines come together.
That broad view of care later also became the foundation for UniqueTeams. Through that company, Jurian, together with his two business partners and their team of 25 employees, helps physiotherapy practices develop a healthy supplementary revenue model, among other things by better integrating vitality, lifestyle and physio fitness. In doing so, UniqueTeams works together with Matrix Fitness, the largest fitness supplier in the physiotherapy market. UniqueTeams now supports more than three hundred physiotherapy practices in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
The growth of both companies brought Jurian to a turning point, he says. "Fysio Donders demanded attention, but so did UniqueTeams. And privately, as a husband and father, I wanted to make more conscious choices about where my energy went. Ultimately, there are only 24 hours in a day."
Behind that choice lies a bigger personal mission for Jurian. "I want to give the wonderful profession of physiotherapy the stage it deserves and make the combination of physiotherapy and lifestyle accessible as widely as possible. With the sale of Fysio Donders, the partnership with FGN and the national rollout of the UniqueFit concept, I can support many more practices and, ultimately, help many more people to live healthily for the long term."
"If you choose the wrong buyer, you can never walk back in there with a good feeling again."
Not just a business decision
Jurian's father is still involved in the practice and his wife works there as a physiotherapist. Precisely for that reason, the buyer had to be the right fit not only financially, but culturally as well. For Jurian, it was above all important that the transaction aligned with his personal course: transferring the practice carefully, creating room for UniqueTeams and at the same time doing justice to the team, the patients and the family history of Fysio Donders. "If you choose the wrong party, you can never walk back in there with a good feeling again."
Through entrepreneurs in the physiotherapy sector who had previously been advised by Rembrandt M&A, Jurian came into contact with M&A advisor David Linders. "I have experience myself in buying and restructuring companies, but as a seller you find yourself in a different playing field. You don't know what you don't know, certainly not when you are sitting at the table with professional parties. On top of that, this is the company my father once started. That is why I deliberately chose an external advisor: someone who oversees the process, can keep their distance and can conduct the negotiations professionally."
More than just the sale of a practice
There were three seriously interested buyers in total, which fits the consolidation wave that the physiotherapy sector has been going through for several years now. In the end, Jurian chose Fysiogroep Nederland (FGN), because in his view this party best matched the culture and the future of the practice.
“I could never have managed that as a seller without Rembrandt by my side.”
At the same time, something else remarkable was taking place. Alongside the sale of Fysio Donders, a second negotiation was underway: FGN and UniqueTeams were exploring a nationwide partnership, through which UniqueTeams will roll out its proven approach more broadly across the group. UniqueTeams works closely with Matrix Fitness / EGYM as part of this concept. Matrix Fitness / EGYM supplies the practices with equipment and provides ten years of service, meaning the partnership immediately took on a nationwide dimension as well. This resulted in two simultaneous deals that reinforced one another: the acquisition of a strong practice and a nationwide partnership that benefits all parties. At the same time, arrangements were made regarding Jurian’s future involvement with the practice.
The process, which began in September 2025, ultimately took almost a year. Jurian: “Fysiogroep Nederland later described it as one of the most remarkable deals they had ever completed. Two deals coming together simultaneously and interlocking, that is what made this process unique. I could never have managed it as a seller without Rembrandt by my side.”
Insight from Rembrandt M&A
Entrepreneurs who run a second business alongside their core business face a challenging task when selling. A buyer assesses not only the business that is for sale, but often also takes into account what is happening beyond it. For Jurian, this brought together two important processes: the transfer of Fysio Donders and the next step for UniqueTeams.
In these types of processes, Rembrandt M&A structures the process in such a way that multiple scenarios can be assessed alongside one another and negotiations can be conducted at arm’s length. This gave Jurian the space to continue making the right decisions, despite the complexity of two simultaneous negotiations.
"Fysiotherapie is een prachtig vak, dat wilde ik niet zomaar loslaten."
The right partner for the next phase
Jurian remains involved with the practice following the sale. For the time being, he will continue to work as a physiotherapist while also taking on an advisory role. “Physiotherapy is a wonderful profession, and I did not want to give that up just like that. It says a lot that FGN gives me every opportunity to remain active as a physiotherapist for the time being.”
With Fysiogroep Nederland as its new owner, the continuity of Fysio Donders is secured. At the same time, Jurian has the space to focus on the further growth of UniqueTeams and his ambition to support physiotherapy practices nationwide. According to Jurian, having a clear vision for the future was essential throughout the sale process. “In a process like this, there is a lot to deal with strategically and emotionally, alongside your day to day work. That is why you need to know exactly what you want beforehand. For me, that was clear: I wanted to ensure a successful transfer of Fysio Donders while creating the space to make an impact nationwide with UniqueTeams. Thanks in part to Rembrandt, I have now achieved that.”
